SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: The next wave in enterprise is likely to be TaaS (technology-as-a-service), if we go by what the analysts at Gartner are saying.

As per reports coming out of the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, currently going on in the city, TaaS will play a key role in the future procurement by enterprises as its pay-by-use model could cut user upfront costs, besides reducing vendor margins.

According to Gartner, by 2011 40 percent of all IT technology products will be sold as a service. Users will only pay to use the software or the hardware, and not to own it.

Craig Baty, group VP of analyst house Gartner, speaking at the Gartner Symposium , said that organisations were now undertaking "acquisition of access, rather than acquisition of assets."

He said that rather than paying large upfront costs to buy new technology, companies can pay for TaaS in several flexible variants, including per person, usage, day, microsecond, bandwidth and storage.
