80 million subscribers requested for MNP in 2012: TRAI

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in its subscription data for December 31, 2012, finds that by the end of December 2012, about 80.06 million subscribers had submitted requests for mobile number porting (MNP).

TRAI said that in MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India) maximum number of requests have been received in Rajasthan (7.59 million) followed by Gujarat (6.94 million), whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (9.90 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh Service area (7.40 million). In the month of December 2012, total number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP was 2.94 million.

The regulatory body also finds that there is an overall dip in telecom subscription rate during this period. With 864.72 million wireless connections, there is a 2.91 per cent decline as compared to previous month. While the wireline telephony showed negligible dip (0.27 per cent) over November 2012 and has 30.79 million subscribers.

The urban mobile connections, it said were 533.12 million with 3.75 per cent plunge, over November last year.

"Subscription in the urban areas decreased from 577.78 million in November, 2012 to 556.96 million at the end of December, 2012. Subscription in rural areas decreased from 343.69 million to 338.54 million during the same period," the statement said.

Total broadband subscriber base has increased from 14.88 million at the end of November 2012 to 14.98 million at the end of December 2012, there by showing a monthly growth of 0.67 per cent. 160 Internet Service Providers (ISPs), as on December 31, 2012 were providing broadband services in the country, it said.
