7.34 mn mobile subscribers added in June

NEW DELHI: Indian telecom industry recorded the highest ever addition of 7.34 million in the month of June, taking the subscriber base to 225.21 million.

The GSM segment has shown an increase of 5.39 million during the month of June 2007, the CDMA segment of 1.95 million while the fixed segment has decreased by 0.18 million. The overall tele-density improved further to 19.86 per cent in June 2007 compared to 13.68 per cent as on June 30, 2006.

In the wireless segment, 7.34 million subscribers have been added in June, while 6.57 million subscribers were added in May registering an increase of 11.72 per cent.

In the GSM segment, Tamilnadu telecom circle added more than 4.7 lakh subscribers during June 2007. In the CDMA segment, Andhra Pradesh telecom circle added 1.74 lakh subscribers during the period. Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (E) and Uttar Pradesh (W) telecom circles have added more than 5 lakh subscribers each.

The growth of broadband connections improved further and at the end of May 2007, about 2.43 million broadband connections were provided and coverage of broadband connectivity by public sector service providers has reached 1039 cities. The total number of existing ISP licensees is 377.
