These 5 Free online courses from Coursera may make you a tech expert before the lockdown ends!

A lot of us have been looking for online courses, that we can do while sitting at home. So, the lockdown is an opportunity to increase our skills and add value to our career and resume. So, even if you have missed out on upskilling, or finished most of your previous courses, here is a list of 5 such free online courses from one single portal.  Further, these courses will help you increase your understanding of the basic concepts of technology (and they are free!). Here are the five free online courses from Coursera.

1. Machine Learning

This course provides a broad introduction to machine learning, data mining, and statistical pattern recognition. The topics include:

- Supervised learning (parametric/non-parametric algorithms, support vector machines, kernels, neural networks)

- Unsupervised learning (clustering, dimensionality reduction, recommender systems, deep learning)

- Best practices in machine learning (bias/variance theory; innovation process in machine learning and AI)

The course will also draw from numerous case studies and applications. So, you'll also learn how to apply learning algorithms to building smart robots (perception, control), text understanding (web search, anti-spam), computer vision, medical informatics, audio, database mining, and other areas.

2. Data Science from IBM

If you are interested in developing skills and experience to pursue a career in Data Science or Machine Learning, this course is for you. It is 9 courses subset that covers topics like:

- open-source tools and libraries, methodologies, Python, databases, SQL, data visualization, data analysis, and machine learning.

Further, you will practice hands-on in the IBM Cloud using real data science tools and real-world data sets. Also, this is a beginner to the experienced level course that does not need any computer science or programming knowledge.

Upon completing these courses, which consist of hands-on assignments and building a portfolio of data science projects, you will get a certificate. In addition to earning a Professional Certificate from Coursera, you will also receive a digital Badge from IBM recognizing your proficiency in Data Science.

3. AI 101

This is a course from DeepLearning.ai. In this course, you will learn most of the basic stuff about Artificial Intelligence. This includes:

- The meaning behind common AI terminology, including neural networks, machine learning, deep learning, and data science

- What AI realistically can and cannot do

- How to spot opportunities to apply AI to problems in your organization

- What it feels like to build machine learning and data science projects

- How to work with an AI team and build an AI strategy in your company

- How to navigate ethical and societal discussions surrounding AI

Though this course is largely non-technical, engineers can also take this course to learn the business aspects of AI. You will also get a certificate after you complete this course. It will only take 7-8 hours to finish. Take the course from here.

4. Computer Science and Programming

This course covers the basics of the book Computer Science: An Interdisciplinary Approach. It intends to teach programming to those who need or want to learn it, in a scientific context. The topics that the course covers are basic programming elements such as variables, conditionals, loops, arrays, and I/O. Then, the course teaches functions. Later, it introduces key concepts such as recursion, modular programming, and code reuse. Then, it introduces object-oriented programming.

The course also uses Java programming language and teaches basic skills for computational problem-solving. These are applicable in many modern computing environments. All the features of this course are available for free. It does not offer a certificate upon completion as it is a class-like model. Enrol in the course here.

5. Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency

This course from Princeton University teaches everything you need to know about Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency. If you need answers to these: How does Bitcoin work? What makes Bitcoin different? How secure are your Bitcoins? How anonymous are Bitcoin users? What determines the price of Bitcoins? Can cryptocurrencies be regulated? What might the future hold?; the course may be the answer. All the features of this course are available for free. But it does not offer a certificate upon completion.
