Addressing the CIOs at the CIOL C Change, Pradeep Gupta dwelt on some of positive points of 2003-04 and said that last year saw the return of business confidence across all the areas, strong growth in all sectors, a booming stock market and general feel-good factor across the country.

He also revealed that offshore service delivery is thriving despite the negative publicity it received and the global backlash against outsourcing. According to IDC forecasts, data services will be the new battle ground for Indian telcos and digital imaging will drive new dynamics. Besides 2004, will see major growth in security market, data storage, MFDs in verticals like government and BFSI.

Speaking on "Aligning IT strategy with business strategy", he said, "In today’s business imperatives a lot of traits are common to all the business chiefs from proper communication, cost control, productivity to managing TCO of the organizations. In this context, CIOs are expected to don the facilitators role to keeping abreast with technology changes to business changes."

He said, "CIOs now have to align IT goals with that of their business objectives in terms of long term business plans, consolidating information resources and justify IT infrastructure. They need to convince the top management for any investment and sell the ideas to them."

With the strong boom in the market, enterprises are focussing on growth, productivity improvement and will reach out to customers. IT is now considered as a strategic asset and not as an expenditure. And this is where the CIOs can leverage the opportunity and make the best use of the prevailing economic conditions.
