NEW DELHI: The popular Google-owned video-sharing site YouTube had started removing World Cup cricket video clips after the International Cricket Council (ICC) accused it of copyright infringement and ordered the removal of such clips.

“This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by ICC Development (International) Limited and Global Cricket Corporation Pte Limited,” a message on YouTube said when searched for a specific World Cup cricket related clip.

However, many other clips are still available on YouTube, as well as on other sites.

The ICC had earlier asked YouTube to take out the World Cup cricket clips from its site, accusing the latter of copyright infringement.

ICC Development (International) Ltd, the global cricketing body’s commercial arm and Singapore-based Global Cricket Corporation (GCC), the commercial rights holder, said there was an issue in YouTube running the clips.

Former ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya refused comment on the issue.

"I have come across this news item. However, I am not ready to comment on this matter till I discuss (the matter) with the (ICC) members," he told CyberMedia News.

Earlier this month, YouTube had removed unauthorized Oscar award videos after the Academy objected to running such clips.

YouTube running the cricket videos amounts to copyright infringement under the Indian IT Act.

“Under Section 79, IT Act, network service providers (like Google, You Tube) shall be liable for all third party data or information made available,” said Pawan Duggal, advocate, Supreme Court of India.

He added ICC can initiate legal action against You Tube, as it has already sold the broadcast and online right to another party.

The broadcast rights have been given to GCC and online rights have been exclusively granted to NetResult. GCC is responsible for contracting broadcast and commercial partners for ICC events.
