Placement cells at engineering colleges this year show a 20 percent to 30 percent hike in entry-level salaries.

Leading the pack is global online payment solution provider PayPal which handed offer letters with annual pay of Rs 20.50 lakh to candidates from the Sastra University. Last year too, the company offered the highest pay, Rs 15.50 lakh to a fresher from the same university.

PayPal also made offers of Rs 20 lakh each to 15 graduates of VIT University (formerly Vellore Engineering College).

"There has been more Rs 15 lakh-plus offer in the first recruitments this year," Samuel Rajkumar, Dean, Placements, VIT, says. "Nineteen students shared 23 offers this year in that category, compared to 12 last year."

PayPal, Practo, DE Shaw and Flipkart made the first offers yesterday. Code Nation and Endurance have sought another round of interaction with students, he informs.

This also throws up an interesting trend that students are more open to working with start-ups, product companies including app-developers, and e-commerce players.

The large tech companies too issued the appointment letters.

"Twenty-seven BTech computer science and IT students did summer internships at Microsoft's Hyderabad campus. Microsoft announced that it would hire 20 of them," Rajkumar states.

"Amazon has finalized offers for 13 candidates this year, up from last year's four," remarks S Ganapathy of SRM University. "Salaries are slightly higher at Rs 13 lakh to Rs 16 lakh this year."

It must be noted that Tamil Nadu produces close to 2 lakh engineers every year, more than any other state in the country. According to reports, IT/ITES companies recruited 28,000 engineers from campuses and another 15,000 fresh graduates in off-campus recruitments in the state last year. Placement officials estimate that companies will make 50,000 campus recruitments this year.
