NEW DELHI: Longhorn the next version of Microsoft's operating system after Windows has been in news for various reasons, one of them being WinFS, the next-gen file system it was supposed to incorporate with it. But the new technology seems to be taking some time to brew, as in a recent announcement Bob Muglia, Senior Vice President of the Windows Server Division, told the press that WinFS would not ship with Longhorn server, but would be delayed even beyond that.

Originally scheduled for release with Longhorn, WinFS was then to make its debut with the Longhorn server and be available as a free add-on for Longhorn. But this announcement has pushed WinFS' release further to 2008.

According to Muglia, the reason for this series of delay is because the product is not yet ready. This is what he had to say, "We've been working on this for a long time, and this team is going to deliver. Our mistake, frankly--and it was a mistake--was to go out and talk about it before we really had clarity as to how we would be able to deliver it and all the complexities there."

To change the way in which file systems are conceived has been a 'long-time dream' for Microsoft, but nobody expected that it would take so long, informed Muglia.

Microsoft is getting popular for delaying releases and cutting down on features, but the wait shall be worthwhile if it can deliver on its promises as far as the technology goes.
