New Update

To verify the authenticity of university certificates submitted by technical graduates for

the H-IB visa, a web-based system will be available to help crosscheck the academic

credentials of software professionals. This would help the Immigration and Naturalisation

Services (INS) to verify the certificates instantly, which would speed up the visa

process. Now, every U.S. Embassy and Consulate worldwide can use this database.

This software has been developed by Wipro Infotech Software and Services and has been
handed over to Mr. Sanjay Das Gupta - the secretary of the Department of Information

Technology. This database was tested at a few visa-issuing posts in the country and this

had favorable implications as it had helped reduce frauds in the H-IB visa category. About

90% of the applications for H-IB visas are from Software professionals and about 20 - 25%

of H-IB cases had some element of fraud as there is high area of manipulation in the work

experience and degree certificates.

This system has been developed with features such as complete database of the applicant
with his/her picture, marks, projects handled and personal details. The database would be

updated once in six months and the server would be kept at the Information Technology

Secretariat and the data would be provided by the Visvesvaraya Technological University

(VTU) which is the governing body for 71 engineering colleges in Karnataka.
