The new earth station will be installed at Videsh Sanchar Bhavan - Sanjaynagar which will

act as the centre for providing leased lines internet services and the site at

International Technological Park Limited (ITPL) will act as a hub.

According to Mr. Amitabh Kumar acting Chairman and Managing Director, Bangalore will be
provided with all the Internet access and services and will be one of the important

centres for VSNL. The new facility will provide highspeed global connectivity to users.

The city has 155 leased lines, 85 Internet leased lines and 28 frame relay lines and nine
exchanges in the city will soon have E1-R2 connectivity enabling faster Internet access

with a single dial number. This will increase the internet-account penetration in the

city, which is way behind other metros. It is expected that in a year from now the number

of Internet leased-lines connection would overtake the private leased lines across the

country.

After the liberalisation of Internet services, over 70 ISPs have applied for gateway
connection with VSNL. The gateway services of VSNL has been restricted to six centres in

the country.

Mr. Amitabh added that among all the Internet services provided by VSNL, the leased line
network is the fastest growing. VSNL is also planning to establish a national information

backbone in the next six months along with the Department of Telecommunications. VSNL is

also evolving a e-commerce network infrastructure and are just waiting for the cyber laws

to be in place before any activity could take place.

By September or October transmission and cross connect systems will be Y2K compliant.

As far as future plans are concerned, VSNL would be looking into Internet telephony, web
commerce and real time audio and video.
