Targeted at enterprise and high-speed data centers supporting cloud service delivery, the VSC8489 family offers a low cost, flexible LAN/WAN solution with multiple interface options for KR backplane and SR/LR/ER/ZR/220MMF optical module applications. The VSC8489 family also has  industry's small  footprint in its feature class, consuming 22% less area than the competition.

Cisco's Global Cloud Index (2012-2017) forecasts a 4.5-fold growth in cloud network traffic, from 1.2 zettabytes annually to 5.3 zettabytes by 2017. Driving much of that data traffic will be end users accessing entertainment, personal and business content on demand, on any device.

Richard Interrante, product marketing director at Vitesse, said: "Demand for greater bandwidth and more feature-rich solutions at the physical layer is evident everywhere, from the Enterprise to service providers, as 10G technologies become increasingly more cost effective. The VSC8489 family gives OEMs an efficient way to upgrade networks transitioning to cloud and other virtualized environments."

The VSC8489 family includes two products with VeriTime, the industry's de facto IEEE 1588v2 timing synchronization technology, as well as one without VeriTime for cost-sensitive applications that are not timing-critical.

The VSC8489 family allows customers to choose the right 10GE PHY for their needs now, with a seamless and pin-compatible upgrade path to advanced timing and security features if, or when, they are required in the future. The new 10GE PHY family comprises:

VSC8489:

SynchroPHY Dual 10GE/1GE RXAUI/XAUI to SFP+/KR PHY with VeriTime and extended temperature range

The VSC8489 family shares other  features as well, such as failover switching and lane ordering, simultaneous LAN and WAN support, VScope input signal monitoring, flexible clocking options for Synchronous Ethernet and unified software API.

The VSC8489 family is pin-compatible with VSC8490 and VSC8491 SynchroPHY 10GE/1GE PHYs with Intellisec, the industry's FIPS 197 certified PHY technology to enable flow-based IEEE 802.1AE 256-bit AES MACsec security encryption over any network for cost-effective network-wide link layer encryption, while still maintaining nanosecond-accurate IEEE1588v2 timing.
