Verizon is planning to use the post-merger AOL-Yahoo subsidiary as a platform to “test out an over-the-top service,” according to a report from Variety.

Citing remarks, the Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam made at a telecom conference in Boston this week, the report said that Verizon’s upcoming service will offer viewers something similar to a traditional cable package. This service, however, should not be confused with Go90, Verizon’s not so popular existing mobile video service.

McAdam’s statements largely confirm an earlier report from Bloomberg which disclosed Verizon’s plans to enter the over-the-top live TV market with a package of dozens of channels to be sold separately from its FiOS home TV offering.

With Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo expected to close next month, Verizon may launch its TV streaming service as early as July, though a later launch is likely more probable.

Unfortunately, McAdam only confirmed about streaming service without any further details. He did, however, hint at Verizon’s openness to M&A opportunities, noted Variety. This is in reference to remarks he made in April, saying that the company could consider mergers with Disney, Comcast or CBS if the circumstances become so.
