NEW DELHI, INDIA: The US government has urged India to auction 2G and 3G spectrum for accelerating the growth in the telecom sector.

This comes at a time when the Indian mobile industry is finding it hard to go further due to the lack of spectrum and the Ministry of Telecommunications failing to put a spectrum allocation policy in place.

Eric Anthony Jones, first secretary (Economics), Department of State, Embassy of USA said, “The government of US has written to the Indian government recommending open auction policy for allocating 2G and 3G spectrum to mobile operators. The recommendations stated that the government should initiate steps for early vacation and allocation of spectrum both for 2G and 3G.”

The recommendation has also stated about the expansion of broadband services.

Jones said that penetration of broadband would help in implementation of e-Governance, e-Health and e-Education in the country.

“The broadband penetration in India is low compared to other countries. This is especially so in rural areas,” Jones said.

The telecom operators have been seeking fresh allocation of 2G spectrum. But the government is still groping in the dark in this regard.

The defense forces are yet to release the spectrum for both 2G and 3G.
