Facebook product manager, Greg Marra,  in a post said, "You decide who you want to connect to, and what Pages and public figures you want to follow."

The news feed settings will allow you to unfollow, re-follow people, pages, groups. The post added that if you see a story you’re not interested in or don’t want to see, you can tap the arrow in the top right of that story to hide it.  When you hide a story you’ll have the option to ask to see less from that person or Page.

This feature gives you more control over your newsfeed and lets you choose what you want to see in your newsfeed. So, better than unfriending people, you can always unfollow them.
