UIDAI to enable effective NREGA implementation

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is set to be made more effective with the help of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

UIDAI announced on Thursday a formal collaboration with NREGA so that the benefits of a unique identity number for each individual would help ensure greater effectiveness of the Act in implementation, payment delivery and transparency.

The announcement was made by Nandan Nilekani, the Chairman of the UIADI, on Thursday, at a National Workshop on NREGA organized by the Union Ministry of Rural Development in New Delhi, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The purpose of both these projects were similar - to ensure inclusiveness and a pro-poor approach, said Nilekani.

While praising NREGA as a phenomenal program, Nilekani emphasized the need to connect the unique identification process with every job card holder under the NREGA Scheme. The linkages with UID is possible in job cards, muster roll and bank accounts of NREGA beneficiaries.

The process would eliminate duplicate job cards, ghost beneficiaries while facilitating easy bank account opening, tracking the mobility of NREGA workers and ensuring a better monitoring of the system, he added.

While addressing the gathering Union Panchayati Raj Minister Dr. C.P.Joshi at underlined the need to ensure effective implementation of the NREGA and the role of information technology in the implementation. He said NREGA is the new model of E-Governance and stressed the need to integrate technology for the benefit of the rural people.
