Twitter, sometime back has also partnered with the National Football League (NFL) for streaming 10 Thursday Night Football games in September. It also tested its live streaming feature during Wimbledon.

This could be a strategic move by Twitter eyeing more user engagement on the platform. Live streaming of major sports events such as NFL, certainly have the potential to attract more users onto the platform and boost Twitter's advertising revenue.

Twitter has invested in companies like Magic Pony and SoundCloud to strengthen its video and live content.

In a separate move, it also allowed users to post videos of up to 140 seconds and said it will also allow video publishers to make money out of their content on Vine, its video streaming service.

Another reason that Twitter is dead serious about the live video content could be the stiff competition it is likely to face from Facebook in terms of real-time news and content delivery. Facebook has already upped the ante in the news game with Instant Articles and might end up engaging a much larger user base than Twitter for the same.
