Twitter lets you mute the chatter

BANGALORE, INDIA: Twitter makes the mute button official finally. In the official Twitter blog, Paul Rosania, product manager, Twitter confirmed the introduction of this new feature for Twitter users.

"Mute gives you even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user's content from key parts of your Twitter experience," said Rosania.

Explaining further Rosania said, "Muting a user on Twitter means their Tweets and Retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user. The muted user will not know that you've muted them, and of course you can unmute at any time."

Some things to know about muting:

  • Muted users can follow you and interact with your content.
  • You can follow a user you've muted. Muting a user will not cause you to unfollow them.
  • @ replies and @ mentions from muted users you follow will still appear in your Notifications tab.

  • Muted users you follow can still send you a direct message.
  • When you mute a user, their previous Tweets will still be displayed; only Tweets from the point you muted them will be hidden.

Twitter extednds this facility for the iPhone and Android users as well. Device notifications can be turned on or off to mute or unmute users' Tweet, depending on the user's choice.

To mute a user from a Tweet on your iOS or Android device or on the web version, tap 'more' at the bottom of the Tweet and then mute @username. To mute someone from their profile page, tap the 'gear icon' on the page and choose mute @username.

Twitter is expected to roll out the mute feature in the coming weeks.
