Moderating a panel discussion on X-Internet and its applications at the

CIOL Enterprise Connect networking event in Delhi, Venkat Iyer, CIO at TVS Motor

Company Ltd said that India has already started to experience different flavors

of extended Internet being implemented in different sectors like automotive and

healthcare. “Exciting times are ahead of us, specially when the government is

now emphasizing more on stretching the broadband envelope to smaller regions of

the nation,” he added.

Addressing the gathering, Vice President for enterprise applications at

Forrester Research, Navi Radjou said, "There are a lot of areas within BPO

which can be benefited if X-Internet model is applied efficiently. Next wave of

BPO will be fuelled by concepts like — remote asset management, remote

diagnostic and remote scheduling of applications. Indian BPO companies should

start looking at this segment seriously to be able to take the first mover

advantage."

According to Radjou, X-Internet is about combining software and user

interface. "It moves code more efficiently from servers to user PCs and

other devices to reduce latency and enhance greater interactivity online. The

adoption to X-internet will be driven by three factors - competition, customers

and compliance to government related policies," he explained.

The keyword X-Internet might sound exciting, but the idea of an

extended Internet has actually been around awhile. "Telematics is a kind of

extended Internet application. So are instant messaging, wireless sensors and

plug-and-play. And as innovations like microelectromechanical systems (MEMS),

Wi-Fi, ultra wideband and others mature, the possibilities expand beyond the

existing walls of the traditional Internet," Radjou added.

IT head at Ranbaxy Promoter group company Fortis Healthcare Sunil

Kapoor said that healthcare is one such segment where there are a lot of

untapped opportunities. "We need to improve the existing communication

infrastructure and once it is done, we would be able to work in areas like

Tele-Radiology, telemedicine and providing online OPD consulting," he

added.

Talking about the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC)
initiatives in the direction of extended enterprise, its group GM Amitabh Pandey

said that the organization has moved very quickly in terms of putting an

e-commerce based infrastructure in more than 113 cities within the

country.

"Integrating a mobile interface with our existing method of
booking tickets online is under consideration. This new system is running under

pilot as of now and would soon be launched for the public," he

informed.
