NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of unveiling a consultation paper on the international bandwidth issue, Indian telecom watchdog — TRAI is gearing itself up to release a consultation paper on the issue of domestic bandwidth.

"It is a very comprehensive document, which will go into a number of pages and will be released in a couple of day's time. Here we would be providing consulting on reducing the ceiling tariff of bandwidth in the domestic sector," informed TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal.

Welcoming this move by TRAI, ISPAI (Internet service Providers Association of India) president, Amitabh Singhal said that pricing of domestic bandwidth was not being reviewed for over five years, so this consultation would be viewed as a breeze of fresh air by the industry.

"This would be really helpful to the cause of increasing the broadband access in the country. In fact, last time any reduction happened on domestic bandwidth was only in 1999. So, it's been a long time since we had anything on this front," he added.

He also stated that bandwidth price for the domestic sector should be reviewed on a regular basis, as it constitutes an important part of the overall broadband game.
