It would also have 8-mega pixel cameras on handset enabling camcorder facility. Combination of mobile and TV would be the next big event in cell phone growth, revealed Dr Biswadeep Mitra, managing director, Texas Instruments India, at the 3G India 2007 International Conference, organized by Bharat Exhibitions.

Earlier, GS Grover, Telecom Commission member (Services), assured the telecom industry awaiting the 3G policy that the Commission had finalized consultations on it to enable the government to announce the policy within a few days. However, he stressed the benefits of convergent networks.

He asked telecom service providers to go for convergent networks that would enable users to move from mobile phones outdoors to fixed line phones indoors smoothly to optimise the scarce resource of spectrum. "Second-generation mobile phone service with enhancements with higher spectrum efficiency was possible. There is practical need for such converged networks," he added.

The enhanced services through 2.5 and 2.75 G networks would make the public used to richer customer experience and prepare it to move mover to 3G, Grover said. New gateways for these could be installed right away to provide such higher services. “Don’t wait for 3G but start the jump to the next level right away” was his advice to the service providers quoting the technology developments forecast at the conference by many experts.

"This could even help move over to 4G as 3G had already been overtaken by the fourth generation mobile services," added Grover.
