BANGALORE: Perhaps for the first time, webmasters in the
country will get a first person account of the experiences of a hacker. White
Hat hacker Tom Cervenka will conduct a seminar on ‘Hacking Portals and Web
sites — Prevention and Damage Control’ on Thursday in Bangalore.
Cervenka, who is the Internet Security Expert in Internet
Component Management Group (iCMG) Inc. is popularly known as Blue Adept. He will
touch upon the biggest worry that a webmaster of a dotcom carries on his
shoulder — Web security.
Cervenka is credited to have identified security loopholes in
leading high traffic Web sites that include Yahoo, Lycos, eBay, Hotmail, Excite
and Eudora.
A hacker is identified as a white hat or black hat, depending
on the direction he uses his talent. White hat hackers are those who identify
possible security loopholes and advice the company on measures to be taken to
avoid such a situation.
iCMG is also conducting a special workshop by Cervenka for
officers from the police force, the defense department and CIDs. Some of the top
level IAS and IPS officers are expected to attend this session. A few officials
from the defense research organizations are also attending the general seminar.
According to iCMG, Cervenka will help find holes in Web
services (such as online auction, Web mails, services with chat areas). He will
focus on ways to manage HTML attachments in Web services and prevent any
malicious use.
