BANGALORE, INDIA: The Vodafone India MD and CEO, Marten Pieters will be stepping down from his position on April 1 and will be succeeded by the Chief Operating Officer, Sunil Sood. Pieters was appointed as Vodafone India MD and CEO in February 2009 and Vodafone India doubled revenues, added more than 100 million customers, increased market share and launched data services used by more than 57 million customers under his leadership.

"It has been a pleasure and a privilege to lead Vodafone India and I would like to thank all of my colleagues for their passion and commitment in support of our goals over the last six years. I am delighted to hand over to Sunil; we have worked closely together throughout my time with Vodafone and I could not wish for a better successor," said Pieters.

Being the longest-serving Chief Executive of an Indian telecommunications company, he has led Vodafone India's participation in all spectrum auctions since 2009. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) last year. Last year, Pieters was also conferred with the Voice&Data 'Telecom Person of the Year' for 2013.

Thomas George, SVP and Head of CMR said, "The change in the leadership was expected as Pieters has served Vodafone for more than five years. Typically, any expat serves a contractual term of 5 years. Also, leadership change is a widespread practice in multinational corporations, whenever a new government comes to power in the countries they are operating."
