BANGALORE, INDIA: Networking company Cisco introduced media-ready wireless local area network (WLAN) capabilities as part of its Cisco unified wireless network and also announced the launch of VideoStream, a set of features to deliver high definition videos and multimedia over wireless and wired network.
According to the analyst company IDC, today, enterprises view videos for almost 4.6 hours each month, which is expected to double in the next two years. With 1.1 billion new WiFi devices to come in by 2011, it is also estimated that 802.11n will feature in 87pc of smartphones by 2014. 11n to feature in 87pc of Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones Chris Kozup, senior manager, Mobility Solutions, Cisco, said: "About 90 percent of enterprise traffic will be from videos by 2013. Cisco VideoStream brings the wired network experience into wireless, in the 802.11n (WiFi) spectrum, thus also augmenting bandwith, quality and scale."
With the introduction of 802.11n, Cisco will be able to scale up bandwidth in order to stream high definition videos over wireless networks. According to the company Cisco VideoStream also has the capability of detecting the interference of other devices operating in the same spectrum frequency (2.4-2.5Mhz) as that of WiFi and customise it accordingly.
"Unlike Aruba's videostreaming solution, where videos are transmitted to multiple streams, in turn causing more consumption of bandwidth, Cisco VideoStream can set protocols so that only single streams are sent. We see a high demand for this soltion from the healthcare, education institutes and also technology industries in India.
Cisco also announced, though not in India, a range of wireless divices, namely Cisco Unified Wirelss IP Phone 7925, Cisco Unified IP Phone 9971, Cisco Digital Media Player 4400G Wireless etc.
