TCS wins Wall Street technology award

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Leading IT services and business solutions provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) today announced that The Wall Street Journal, the world’s leading business publication, has selected TCS’ mKrishi service as the winner of its 2008 Technology Innovation Award in the wireless technology category.

The Technology Innovation Award recognizes companies, individuals and organizations worldwide for technological breakthroughs in the areas of medicine, software, the Internet, wireless and consumer electronics, said a press release.

“This award is a testament to the culture of innovation in TCS and to our commitment to creating value for clients, the community and society through pioneering new standards of technology and business models,” said S. Ramadorai, chief executive officer and managing director, Tata Consultancy Services.

He added that they were truly honored to receive the prestigious Wall Street Journal Innovation Technology award for TCS’ mKrishi service.

The Wall Street Journal received more than 700 entries for the Innovation Awards of which 162 entries reached the selection panel, said the release.

The mKrishi, a wireless Agri-advisory Service, is a novel approach to help rural farmers throughout India to have better access to information through a cell phone application.

It has been developed to provide personalized information and expert advice to rural farmers in their local language using sensor technology. It is also adaptable to illiterate farmers to make a query from a cell phone using voice-specific functions, the release added.
