Taiwan telecom carriers plan huge cloud investment

TAIPEI, TAIWAN: Top leading telecom carriers of Taiwan Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., Taiwan Mobile Corp. and Far EasTone Telecom Co., Ltd. have separately announced they will invest multibillion of NT dollars in cloud computing operation.

According to CENS, Taiwan’s No.1 telecom carrier Chunghwa, currently, said it will invest around NT$20 billion (US$689 million at US$1:NT$29) in the business in five years. Far EasTone touted it will spend around NT$6 billion (US$206 million) to boost the operation, its another lavish cloud investment after the company claimed it has snatched around 40% of Taiwan’s market for cloud computing service. Taiwan Mobile Corp. will invest approximately NT$5 billion (US$172 million) in the operation, with nearly half of the money planned for equipment.

Worldwide, Chunghwa has entered into alliance with Quanta Computer Inc., Trend Micro Inc., Inventec Corp., Microsoft Corp., IBM Corp., and China Telecom Co., Ltd. on cloud front. Its collaboration with China Telecom makes it first Taiwanese company pushing into mainland China’s cloud-computing market, the report said.
