"The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia," the company said in its Q4 earnings report.

After several quarters of losses, Nokia recorded a profit of $585 million in revenue and saw its net cash rising from $4.7 billion to 5.8 billion. Last quarter it had recorded over 700 million of loss in revenue. Nokia says it suffered decrease in its revenue owing to low uptake of Symbian and MeeGo range of products.

"On a year-on-year basis, the decrease in Greater China net sales was primarily due to smart devices business unit, most notably lower net sales of our Symbian devices. From an operating system perspective, the year-on-year decline in our smart devices gross margin in the fourth quarter 2012 was primarily due to a lower Symbian gross margin," the statement adds.

This is the reason why it decided to discontinue these range of products and instead concentrate more on Windows range of devices. Nokia Lumia 920, the flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone, has the latest PureView imaging technologogy built into it

The company in its official statement added that during its transition to Windows Phone through 2012, it continued to ship devices based on Symbian.

Symbian devices accounted for 2.2 million units of our smart devices volumes in the fourth quarter 2012, whereas 4.4 million Lumia smartphones were sold during the same period.

Going going forward it expects that this range of devices will account for a significantly smaller portion of its overall smart devices volumes from the first quarter 2013 onwards.
