'Switch on GPS meters, else lose auto permits'

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Delhi Transport Minister, Ramakant Goswami has asked the Transport Department to cancel the permits of 45,000 new autos fitted with GPS-enabled fare meters, the device was found switch off.

The Transport Department has been directed to install GPS meters in about 55,000 autos in the capital.

"It has been decided that all autorickshaws, which are not keeping their GPS system in 'switch on' mode might be issued notice for cancellation of their permits. I have also asked for a time schedule for installation of GPS system in old autorickshaws to be worked out,'' an Indian Express report quoted Goswami, as saying.

The Transport Minister has also constituted a committee that will focus on the issues related to pre-paid system, monitoring and analysing GPS data and colour markings on autos to decide their routes.

The committee will comprise of additional commissioner (Transport), assistant commissioner of police and deputy general manager of Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).
