BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems India has made available the beta release for the
latest version of Java 2 platform, Standard edition software (J2SE).
This version will serve as the foundation for developing and deploying
enterprise-class web applications that are secure and interactive.
Sun Microsystems’ development center in India, the India Engineering Center
(IEC), has been instrumental in the development of the J2SE
1.4. The 45-member Java Software team at IEC, largest outside US, provided the
critical Software Quality Engineering and several key product-engineering
services to enable the final product.
The latest J2SE, provides to the growing Java community, a platform that has
the traditional Java advantages such as cross platform support, and robust
security model, packed with new features and functionality, enhanced performance
and scalability, and improved reliability and serviceability.
The India Engineering Center's (Director) Avinash Agrawal, said "The
Java software development is a key focus area for us at IEC and we intend to
grow the team substantially by end of the year. The successful collaboration on
J2SE 1.4 further reinforces that IEC is the core-engineering center for Sun
worldwide now."
Adding on about the new version, Agrawal said, "J2SE 1.4 is uniquely
positioned to drive the next generation of network computing and lay the
foundation for scalable and available Web applications and services that can run
on any platform."
The new enhancements to the J2SE Platform in version 1.4 include an addition of
XML to the core platform that lays the foundation for interoperable, web
applications and services. New features in Java Foundation Classes/Swing, Java
Webstart, Java Plug-in, and Internationalization enable rich clients for Web
services. New security features including Java Secure Socket and Java
Cryptography, extensions, Java authentication and Authorization Service,
Kerberos support, and Certificate path API.
