BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems, India, has announced that it has increased its

market share in the RISC/UNIX server market in India in Q1 2002, further

extending its lead over the competition. According to IDC's (International Data

Corporation) Q1 2002 Enterprise Server Tracker Report, Sun’s RISC/UNIX server

revenue market share in India grew to 48.4 per cent in Q1 2002 from the 34.6 per

cent achieved in the full year 2001. On a year-on-year basis, Sun's RISC/UNIX

server revenues increased 20.5 per cent in Q1 2002 compared to the same quarter

last year. Sun's unit shipment market share was at an impressive 64.3 per cent.

In the same IDC report, Sun was also reflected as the dominant vendor in the
high-end RISC/UNIX server category, which comprises of servers priced above $1

million. In fact, Sun was the only vendor in India that sold servers in the

high-end category in Q1 2002.

"With this achievement in the high-end RISC/UNIX server category, Sun now
leads in all three server categories - entry, midrange and high-end," said

Sun Microsystems, India, managing director, Bhaskar Pramanik. "Our high-end

flagship Sun Fire 15K servers are clearly preferred over offerings from HP and

IBM to be the choice of enterprises to power today's high-end data

centers."

"Sun's first quarter performance in India was outstanding", said
Rajnish Arora - Sr. Program Manager - Enterprise Servers and Workstations, IDC

Asia/Pacific. "Its perennial focus on the burgeoning mobile telecom

services segment and consistent execution of channel strategy underpinned Sun's

success in Q1 2002."
