Students can now take up internship on eGovernance

BANGALORE, INDIA: eGovernance could be the next area of specialisation for students pursuing engineering, management and computer studies. As a part of the Maharashtra State Government Policy, students from the field of engineering, management or computer studies will be able to take up internship programme with the 'Setu' centres across the state of Maharashtra.

The public administration at district and taluka level had established the Setu centres to facilitate citizens with computerized services that includes issuing various certificates and licences.

This initiative has been taken with a view to make e-governance a sought after subject among the youth. District and state Setu societies are responsible for getting students from reputed engineering and management institutes for internship programmes for tenure of three months, as per the State Directorate of Information Technology's latest policy decision.

"Students would be selected based on their profile and interviews to be conducted. Each of these selected interns is expected to work for maximum of three months with the Setu centres," an Indian Express report quoted a senior government official as saying.

The official also said that students from the institutes located in those districts, where the work is being done, would get more preference over others.

For doing these internships with the Setu centres, Engineering and MCA students would get a stipend of Rs. 2,000 per month and MBA students would receive a stipend of Rs. 3,000 per month.

According to Section 13.11 of the Maharashtra's e-governance policy, "The state government will create opportunities for short-term Internship (which may be stipend-based) of students with Diploma or Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, IT in the state government departments in various e-governance projects and initiatives, and an appropriate certificate shall be provided on completion of the same."

The decision has been positively welcomed by the technical institutes across the state.
