MUMBAI: Sterlite Optical Technologies Ltd (SOTL) was rated 'a clear market
leader and way above other players' in a recent CyberMedia research report
published in the telecom magazine, Voice & Data.
A report on the industry stated that the Indian telecom cables market grew by 59
per cent and was estimated to be around Rs 1566 crores (USD 348 million) in the
financial year April 2005 — March 2006. This was on account of the focus of
service providers to expand their networks.
With broadband starting to pick up in the country, the focus is more on
fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or copper to the premise. In future, one can expect
more requirements of cables coming from the broadband segment.
In the same period, Sterlite Optical grew by 76 per cent to a turnover of Rs 654
crores (USD 145 million) and enjoyed a marketshare of 42 per cent for fiber
optic and copper telecom cables.
Sterlite Optical exports stood at 35 per cent of its total volumes in optical
fibre products and was doing well in China, Europe and Middle East markets,
stated the report.
