Stanford University professor wins ISA award

BANGALORE: The India Semiconductor Association (ISA) today gave away the Technovation Awards here, jointly with the VLSI Society of India (VSI).

ISA’s Technovation initiative touched upon many facets to provide continuous momentum towards promoting innovation in semiconductor research. One of the facets of the Technovation initiative was Technovation Awards, instituted in association with VLSI Society of India (VSI).

The Technovation Awards was meant to recognize and promote excellence in the field of semiconductor research and innovation, and also to offer incentives to fresh talent to excel, ISA said in a statement.

For the year 2007-`08, the awards were in four categories. This year ISA-VSI TechnoVisionary, a Lifetime achievement award has been given to Professor Krishna Saraswat from Stanford University, USA for his outstanding contributions in the field of semiconductors. ISA-VSI TechnoMentor of the year award was given to Prof. Jagdish Kumar of IIT-Delhi, an academic professional working in India for mentoring and research.

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Indian Institute of Technology, Karagpur were joint recipients of the ISA-VSI TechnoShield Award.

The ISA-VSI TechnoShield Award was presented in recognition for academic institutions in India for their contribution in semiconductor research.

National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra and Syam Sundar Reddy E, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, received the ISA-VSI TechnoInventor Award for their outstanding post-graduate and doctoral research thesis.

The jury for the Technovation Awards included eminent personalities from industry and academia across the globe.

"The semiconductor driven industry relies on university research to take it further. India should be an active participant in this process and industry appreciates and understands this fact " said Poornima Shenoy, president, ISA.

"In today's knowledge intensive world a nation's strength lies in its capability to innovate in core technological areas. In immediate past and in the years to come, the semiconductor technology will continue to be a core technology that contributes immensely to a nation's economic strength. Therefore, it is imperative for us to have a sustained effort and strategy to promote and propagate semiconductor research in our R & D institutions" she added.
