ST showcases 4K, DOCSIS, HEVC solutions

NEW DELHI, INDIA: The Indian government-supported, digitization wave has made India a key market for STMicroelectronics' application processors and other digital products. ST India recently organized the DPG Technology Day, that gave a platform to existing and prospective customers/partners to experience ST's comprehensive and complete solutions.



Rajesh Bhat, senior marketing manager, Digital Convergence Group, STMicroelectronics, said that all of ST's devices are benefitting operators. "We are showing 4K, DOCSIS, HEVC solutions, etc. These will benefit operators as well as consumers."

Regarding HEVC, India is focused on HEVC decode. Bhat added: "We are now moving to H.265, which gives further compression, an improvement over MPEG-4. From the service providers' point of view, they can increase the number of HD channels. We are offering something for everyone. We are also offering users better UI experience, as we need to offer better performance to the end users."

As for 4K solutions, STMicroelectronics is showcasing 4K. "We recently signed up with a player in India. In India, the focus is to achieve 100 percent digitization. We are focusing on operators that are looking to enhance their ARPUs in India. The entire market in India is also maturing," Bhat added.

Now, there is the DOCSIS 3 standard as well. And, ST is ahead with solutions. Bhat said: "We have the DOCSIS 3 solution, meant for operators in India, We have solutions for standalone modems, data gateways, and complete gateway solutions. Operators are excited, and they need to upgrade their networks. There are three-four operators, who are already offering some services. DOCSIS 3 allows you to generate higher speeds. Operators can have higher ARPUs, and consumers can have better services. The HD share of boxes have increased. Some operators are offering about 30 channels. This process is gathering speed."

Some of ST's solutions for next-gen TV include advanced UI, HTML-5 based UIs, etc. ST is also displaying Android experience on TV (Android TV on ST's platform).

Regarding the set-top box (STB), industry, for DOCSIS 3, ST said to be close to engagements with some operators. For advenced UIs, it is similar. The industry in India is maturing. "There are some peculiar needs in India, We are addressing those. The Indian TV experience will move up the ladder, keeping with the global standards. We would like to see no further delays in digitization," Bhat concluded.
