BANGALORE, INDIA: Next time when you get a Facebook invite, think twice before accepting it, because the social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are no longer confined to human beings and many pets are also on social networking sites.

According to a British study, pets are the new breed of celebrity on the social networking platforms.

“One in ten of all UK pets have their own Facebook page, Twitter profile or YouTube channel, and more than half of UK pet owners are sharing photos of their pets online,” The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported citing a study.

The rise of pets online has also seen a number of owners joining dedicated sites, with names such as Critter, Catster and Doggie Dating, the report added.

The social media presence has earned money for some, while some others have earned the celebrity status, too.

The New York-based owner of a cat called Romeo has raised more than $50,000 in two years and amassed nearly 10,000 followers, while Maru, another feline, has been filmed embarrassing himself in nearly 200 videos, and has attracted almost 140,000 subscribers.

Another real celebrity pet in the virtual world is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's pet dog, Beast, whom Zuckerberg and his girlfriend Priscilla Chan adopted a few months back.

And with the 'pet on social network' getting momentum, it is likely that some 'pets-only' networks may come up soon, where will hear lots of meows and bow bows! Meow! You heard it?!
