Singtel intros Wavee to take on WhatsApp, Skype

SINGAPORE: Singtel has launched a free-to-use messaging app called Wavee.

Described as an "all-in-one next generation communications" app, it allows users to make "high quality" voice and video calls, send instant messages and share their locations with friends on the map.

Other features of the application include option to set up chat groups and attach photos or videos to messages, bear a similarity to popular messaging app WhatsApp.

Singtel is the first mobile operator to launch such a service in South-east Asia, according to a press release from the telco.

The telco's chief executive Chua Sock Koong had previously stated on two occasions that it should be allowed to charge major online content providers, such as WhatsApp, YouTube and Facebook, for consumers to enjoy faster access to their content.

Compatible with both iPhones (iOS 7 and above) and Android (4.1 and above) devices, Wavee is free to download on the Apple App and Google Play stores.

Singtel's Vice President for Consumer Marketing, Johan Buse, said: "People are looking for richer, more seamless and personal ways of communicating. With Wavee, we are giving our customers a holistic, end-to-end service."

All local data charges for usage of Wavee on Singtel prepaid and postpaid lines will be waived till July 9.
