BANGALORE: SiNett Corporation, WLAN packet processing chips and software designer, has announced that it would invest $ two million in expanding its Bangalore R&D center.

The India headcount is expected to increase from the present 20 to 75 by December 2004. SiNett is also looking to increase the scope of the operations beyond software development and chip verification to include chip development also. Currently, the India center functions merely as a cost center and with the new expansion in place, concurrent development projects will take place at the US and Indian centers.

The US based company is also launching a unified chip solution for wireline and wireless networks by the year-end.

According to SiNett CEO, Shiri Kadambi, the company enjoys the first mover advantage in this space. "This product will facilitate enterprise architectures to have a single cost effective solution that supports wired and wireless access." He also added that the product could be adapted to suit the customer's need either as a WLAN switch, WLAN controller or as a unified solution.

SiNett is in talks with network equipment OEMs to provide seamless wireless access in enterprises. According to Kadambi, the new offering would cut down the cost of switches by 25 percent.

The two-year-old company has managed to raise $15 million in the second round of funding from Clearstone Ventures, Matrix Partners and Alliance Ventures. It plans to utilize this amount in expanding and R&D in Bangalore and marketing and sales programs at its headquarters in Sunnyvale. The company hopes to generate revenues next year.

Kadambi estimates that the company would try to tap around 10 percent of the $ one billion market opportunity.
