BANGALORE: Siemens Communications, provider of telecom equipment, successfully conducted a real time demonstration of five 3G-network demonstration with all network elements. The demonstrations included some of the applications of 3G like video call, video conferencing and high-speed bandwidth.

The complete 3G network included MSC, 3G SGSN, GGSN and RNC and Node B. Speaking at the event, Siemens Public Communication Networks executive VP Dr. Ralf Haas said, "India is ready for 3G technology. Siemens is geared up for driving the technological evolution of the mobile network in India towards 3G. We are ready with the commercial availability of 3G products and are waiting for the regulator to decide the frequency band in India."

"Though India is predominantly a land for voice applications, it also has a lot of software wizards and there is a need to provide voice and messaging, browsing and multimedia apps to that growing base," he opined. However, he was quick to add that deployments of 3G networks would depend on when the spectrum allocation is done and when are the licenses issued.

"The first deployments would be in the metros where the demand for high-speed data applications are good. The capex burden on the operators is very much dependent on the license fee they pay. The actual cost of 3G equipment would be decided by the market prevailing at the time of roll outs," Haas said.

According to Siemens Public Communication Networks Pvt Ltd account management and business development VP Rakesh Malik, with 3G technology, Siemens would help operators to usher in many benefits for Indian mobile customers such a seamless roaming capability, broad bandwidth and high-speed communication (upwards of 2 Mbps).

"Video streaming and real time download of live entertainment, video mails on the move and live camera will all become possible with Siemens 3G," he added. According to the company, the introduction of 3G would also enable efficient spectrum management and additional capacity.

Siemens officials claim their 3G products to be more powerful than others as a result of which there is a reduction of almost 30 percent in number of base stations. The network equipment vendors are positioning 3G not only for data and video applications but also for better use of spectrum for high voice quality when the subscriber base is very large. For Siemens one single node can handle one million subscribers.
