NEW DELHI, INDIA: It is with a sense of deep sorrow that I state that my old friend, colleague and fellow-promoter of HCL, S. Raman, is no more.

I have known Raman for more than 38 years. When I was working in DCM, I met this young and brilliant engineer who always thought differently. He believed in the vision that I had 34 years ago and joined me as a fellow-promoter and technical director of Hindustan Computers Limited.

He not only conceptualized the products of Hindustan Computers but also created the manufacturing organization for the same. Some of his ideas were path breaking and many (like Relational Data Bases, Application Code Generators) were ahead of their time.

When IT services as a business was still a fledgling thought in my mind, it was Raman that I turned to, to translate that to reality. A task which he did very successfully as president and COO of HCL Technologies till he retired in 2005 on health grounds.

A very versatile person in all fields, over the last two years he has been helping me out in designing and creating infrastructure for both HCL’s needs and for some of my philanthropic initiatives.

A soft-spoken technocrat who led from the front, he will always be remembered for his gentle leadership, expansive vision and inspiring personality. He was my sounding board for more than 38 years and I will miss both his wisdom and his company.

My heart goes out to his wife Vasantha and his daughter Usha.
