TOKYO: Sharp Corp, the world's largest maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions, said that it had developed a high-resolution LCD screen for mobile phones that allows users to view full-sized Web pages. Osaka-based Sharp said its LCD panel had a screen measuring 2.6 inches (6.55 centimetres) diagonally and VGA (video graphics array) quality of 307,220 pixels, quadruple the resolution of existing cellphone screens with 76,800 pixels.

As a result, it will be possible to view screens with the same clarity as a personal computer monitor on a mobile phone, allowing users to look at spreadsheets, web sites or text documents.

Until now, mobile phone web pages have been simplified to meet the limits of QVGA (quarter VGA) screens, but Sharp expects the new technology to expand the uses of mobile phones.

The company also plans to use the screens for personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other applications.

Sharp plans to unveil the screens at the CEATEC Japan 2003 industry show in Makuhari, near Tokyo, that begins on Tuesday. It is set to begin sample shipments of the high-resolution panels during the business year starting next April.

Last week, Sharp revised up its six-month profit estimates by 18 percent on strong demand for flat televisions and LCD panels used in mobile phones.

By midday, Sharp shares were up 0.6 percent at 1,673 yen, versus a 1.84 percent rise on Tokyo's electric machinery sub-index.
