SGI unveils VAN, workstation

BANGALORE: As part of their global solution tour 2002, the US-based Silicon

Graphics Inc. (SGI) has announced a host of new solutions to maximize the

potential of the Indian industry. The products include one on Visual Area

Networking and a brand new workstation, Silicon Graphics Fuel Visual, based on a

new architecture.

SGI has also announced extensions to the SGI Onyx 3000 series, thus creating

the widest and the most powerful family of graphics system. The solution tour

also showcases some of the leading applications which reinforces SGI leadership

in high performance visualization and complex Data management. The new

technology and product announcements enhance SGI strengths in its core markets

of manufacturing, media, sciences, defense and energy.

Speaking on the occasion, SGI-India managing director, Prasad Medury said,

" After entering the graphics market, we have now hit the road taking

technologies, products and solutions to the people who use them. Problems

associated with designing complex products like automobiles and aircraft,

creating thrilling special effects for movies, discovering newer and life saving

drugs to oil exploration, we offer a range of customized designing

solution".

He said, "At the SGI-India, has brought high performance visualization

technology to India’s major manufacturing companies and changed the face of

the entertainment, post-production industry. Our major customers in India the

public sectors BHEL and ONGC and also many academic institutions of higher

learning like IITs, Film and broadcasting companies defense, Pharma and

healthcare segments"

Explaining the VAN concept, SGI, vice-president, marketing, Greg Estes says,

" Visual Area Networking (VAN) includes graphics infrastructure software,

graphics hardware and desktop systems that make this vision a reality. The new

software, OpenGL Vizserver 2.0, will allow users to interact with visualization

supercomputers either individually or by a group. It allows globally dispersed

teams to visualize and interact with data in ways previously not possible".

He said, " We have around 43 international customers and our major focus

market are Manufacturing, media, life sciences and government and now looking at

new areas of Bioinformatics. Our revenue for the last fiscal was around $2.3

billion. Though our profits have fallen marginally, partly due to economic

slowdown and our re-focussed strategies, we are expecting to break-even in this

fourth quarter.
