Nexeon to license silicon-anode tech

LONDON, UK: Nexeon Limited, headquartered in Abingdon, England, says it is preparing to license its silicon-anode technology for use with lithium-ion batteries.

Nexeon was founded in 2006 in order to commercialise the researches on batteries being conducted at Imperial College in London. It was set up as an extension of Imperial Innovations.

The company’s silicon-anode technology is based on work done by Prof. Mino Green, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at London’s Imperial College.

Nexeon Limited said in a statement that it is holding talks with battery manufacturers and that it is in a position to supply processed silicon material as “drop-in” process addition.

The use of silicon anodes, according to Nexeon, will enable lithium-ion batteries to have higher energy density as well as longer life between charges.

At present, carbon is usually used as material for anode. Though silicon has been known to have the potential as a superior material for anode, till now, silicon has been having the disadvantage of physical instability when repeatedly charged and discharged. Nexeon claims that its innovative approach solves this problem by changing silicon’s physical form.

According to industry experts, it would appear from Nexeon’s patents that the company has used micrometer-scale etching of silicon wafers to enhance the surface area of the silicon available to act. The company’s patents also detail the micrometer grain size silicon powder that has been used.
