2 new 300 mm Macronix fabs to come in Taiwan

TAICHUNG, TAIWAN: Taiwan-based Macronix International Co is likely to pump in close to $4.9 billion in its bid to build two 300mm fabs at the Central Taiwan Science Park in Taichung.

The move follows the company’s plans to spruce up its facilities as lack of capacity had begun hampering operations. An EETimes report said that the memory manufacturer has already submitted an investment plan for building the fabs in the Central Taiwan Science Park. A company official has said that Macronix International indeed is planning to build the fabs, “but just how to do it is unclear”.

The company, which incidentally is the largest supplier of ROM products worldwide, already owns an 8-inch wafer fab and another 6-inch plant at Hsinchu in Taiwan. It also produces a wide range of NOR flash products and solutions across various densities in embedded, consumer, and enterprise applications.

The current times are in fact good for the company, if one goes by the new plans and the revenues posted. Macronix has seen a boost in business with total net revenues shooting up by 17 per cent sequentially and 11 percent over second quarter 2008 to $175.4 million. The report added that during the second quarter of the current year net income stood at $ 29.8 million, with capacity utilization rate touching 99 per cent.
