Semicon ecosystem to come-up before Fabs

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Semiconductor ecosystem will come up first before the Fabs are established, Poornima Shenoy, president of the Indian Semiconductor Association said.

Talking to CyberMedia News here, Shenoy, who had met the Union IT and Communication Minister A Raja said that the draft guidelines for the semiconductor Fabs were getting ready.

“We are talking to the ministry and now, the draft guidelines for establishing the Semicon Fabs are getting ready. It should be released very soon,” she informed.

When asked about the cap on the number of Fabs to be established, Shenoy said that the ecosystem will come up first before the Fabs are set-up.

“Many companies, forming the semiconductor ecosystem have evinced interest after the policy was released. They are ready to establish their facilities first,” she said.

Shenoy clarified that there will be about ten semiconductor ecosystems being set-up as against the cap of three for the Fabs. Meanwhile, Union Minister for IT and Communications said that the appraisal committee for short-listing companies who are interested in establishing Fabs has been appointed. He said this during the Signet Solar facility announcement here.

“An Appraisal Committee has already been set-up in the Department of Information Technology. The guidelines for operation of the (semiconductor) scheme are being framed and will be issued soon,” he added.
