Red Hat said in a statement that Sehgal, with 17 years of experience, would be responsible for identifying opportunities with the government where computing can be optimized by the use of Linux.

He was heading IBM’s government business for its software group. Besides IBM, Sehgal had earlier worked with L&T, HCL and Novell.

Welcoming Sehgal to Red Hat, Nandu Pradhan, president and managing director of the company said that he believed “Linux as a technology platform has arrived and is poised for explosive growth. This is an exciting time for the entire open source movement in India and I look forward to Sandeep's focus on driving our government strategy."

Red Hat said various State governments were turning to open source and showed keen interest in policies such as the Open Document Format.
