Ranking second was Edward Jones, investment advisers based in St. Louis, which weathered the recession without closing an office or laying off an employee, said the Fortune business magazine and web site.

Rounding out the top five were Wegmans Food Markets of Rochester, New York; Google of Mountain View, California; and Nugget Market, of Woodland, California, it said.

All 100 companies on the list told Fortune they are currently hiring, amounting to some 96,000 positions expected this year, Fortune said. All the companies are based in the United States except the Four Seasons hotel chain, which is based in Canada, Fortune said.

The list appears in the February 8 issue of Fortune magazine, which goes on sale at newsstands on January 25, and also at fortune.com/bestcompanies.

Thirteen of the top 100 companies have been on the list all 13 years Fortune has compiled it: Cisco Systems; Four Seasons; Marriott; Microsoft; Nordstrom; Publix Super Markets Inc; Recreational Equipment REI; SAS; TDIndustries; Goldman Sachs; W.L. Gore; Wegmans and Whole Foods Market Inc.

To compile the list, Fortune surveyed 343 companies. Two-thirds of each score was based on results of surveys sent to a random sample of employees who were asked about management credibility, job satisfaction and camaraderie.

The other third of the score was based on the company's responses to questions about pay, benefits, hiring, communication and diversity.

Fortune said any company at least seven years old with more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible to be considered.
