The company unveiled the 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC card to kick off the first day of the European photography show Photokina. “Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB,” said SanDisk’s Dinest Bahal.

The SDXC card, however is only a prototype at this point of time, with no details available on price or release date. However, just two years ago at Photokina 2014, SanDisk announced 512GB capacity card, world’s largest then, that was later released a few months later. We hope, timeline be same this year as well.

SanDisk says the 1TB card is necessary to match the increasing demand for memory-heavy formats, including 4K and 8K footage, 360-degree video and VR. However, there will be some downsides. The 1TB card is certain to be prohibitively expensive, and at such a large capacity, read and write speeds are going to be comparatively slow.
