With such a move, Samsung and Toshiba has hopped on to a similar league offering models featuring capacity up to 640GB, the largest so far in 2.5-inch mobile hard drives, said a DigiTimes report.

It added that Samsung has in fact showcased a new 640GB 2.5-inch Spinpoint M7 internal HDD which boasts of a density of 516-Gigabit per square inch for each 320GB platter.

This feature is in fact an additional 28 per cent per platter over its previous density-leading 500GB hard drive, the company has said. It added that increasing the real density of 516 Gbit/in2 raises the total drive capacity without adding additional platters.

The report pointed out that the two-platter 640GB drive, by maximizing capacity and at the same time not adding to the mechanical parts, would offer lower power consumption levels and higher operational stability.

Meanwhile, it may be recalled that the Japanese vendor Toshiba, is set to start

sample shipping of its new 640GB 2.5-inch HDD to OEMs and distributors. By the month-end this plan will go on stream. Toshiba’s product boasts of a real density of 817.9 Mbit/mm2 (528.5 Gbit/in2), and feature-rich than the company’s earlier of 5,400RPM drives. Further, it is capable of raising energy consumption efficiency by 28 per cent, it added.

Elaborating more on its product, the Koran vendor said it is capable of a shock resistance level of 400G (2ms) in operation mode and 900G (1ms) when the power is off.
