Samsung to launch foldable smartphones in 2018

The wait for foldable smartphones is coming to an end. Samsung has confirmed to launch foldable OLED smartphones in 2018 at the company’s conference call for their Q4 2017 earnings.

According to the company, "As for the Mobile business, Samsung will continue its efforts to differentiate its smartphones by adopting cutting-edge technologies, such as foldable OLED displays.” The company added, "The cutting-edge differentiation of "foldable OLED smartphones" would happen in 2018."

Apart from foldable OLED panels, Samsung is also looking at expanding its businesses that are working on AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT (Internet of Things) with a core focus on two features - Bixby virtual assistant and the upcoming 5G technology. The company also suggested that it would be focussing on expanding 64-layer V-NAND technology.

Samsung Electronics posted KRW 65.98 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 15.15 trillion in operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2017. Overall, the company reported full-year revenue of KRW 239.58 trillion and full-year operating profit of KRW 53.65 trillion.

The company expects to improve its earnings in the first quarter of 2018, led by the sales of its flagship device, Galaxy S9 which is going to be launched next month.
