Recently, a Chennai doctor used robots to perform open-heart surgery on two patients. “The robot-aided techniques help the patient to start working within ten days of the surgery. It also reduces the pain and blood loss. The technique is very beneficial for the patients as there is less tissue damage, less bleeding and less blood transfusion,” Dr. Ravi Kumar, a heart surgeon at Chettinad Health City Hospital told CyberMedia News.

The method is safe and the chance of getting an infection is also less, as the stitches do not break, opined Dr. Kumar. “In an open-heart surgery the invasion is around 20 centimeter but in a robotic- assisted surgery is only four centimeter,” explained Dr. Kumar.

The surgery procedure is much similar to that of the traditional method and the cost is also equal to the traditional method. “We have minimal invasion so the tissue damage is less. In an open-heart surgery we have to cut through sternum. But in this we have to make a small hole in the space between the ribs. And the magnification is increased by 10-15 times which helps as to do more accurate surgery. Complex surgery can also be done easily,” he said.

One of patient operated is a 25-years-old, who underwent surgery for arterial- septal defect (hole in the heart).

The other one, aged 28, got operated for replacement of mitral valve (left atria-ventricular valve). Both are recovering.

The robot-assisted surgery performed at Chettinad Hospitals is the first of its kind in Asia. The initial investment done for getting a robot for the surgery was Rs.7.5 crores.

The hospital is planning to open a training center within six-month and also procure another robot.
