AHEMADABAD: The National Institute of Design (NID), based in Ahmedabad, is all set to digitize a 42 kilometer road down south to design it into a showpiece stretch. Driving in this stretch between Chennai and Mahabalipuram, to be developed by Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation, will no longer be boring.

This digital road will guide the drivers electronically about everything they need to know in a road and much more. Traffic jams will be intimated well in advance so that lanes can be changed, designer bus stops which tells the waiting passengers about the information about the next bus and also information about the offices and other complexes in the vicinity of this stretch.

In addition to these facilities, those driving on this road will also be able to access all information about breakdown services, health care, florists and many more facilities on the kiosks.

Though NID remains the leading design institute in India, some of its plans, especially those that are designed from a studio for mass use have failed miserably. One such design was the Ahmedabad Railway station where a NID design not only made a mockery of designer strategy, but there were also talks that the railway porters would have designed a better one.
